Kids Create is an after school club for children, aged 5 to 11.  With school funding being cut for creative subjects, we at Arty Farty Retreat aim to bring back creativity into children’s lives.  We aim to help your children express themselves, socialise and collaborate with their peers and learn new skills with different projects each half term.

Each of our classes are aimed at a different age group on a rolling two year programme to ensure the children get the most out of our sessions. Every project will equip the children with knowledge and skills to develop their creativity building their self confidence to study art within school, at home and be able to take it even further! Our Arty Farty SmARTys are trained professionals who are dedicated to inspiring your young ones to express themselves through the arts in our small groups! Please read further below to find out more about the individual projects they will be exploring.

Tuesday, 4pm to 5pm
DOODLEBUGS! (Beginners, ages 5 to 7)
Messy fun and fearless creativity — perfect for first-timers with big imaginations. Next term will be exploring the Language of Art and how we can apply these techniques to our own work.

We’ll explore how artists communicate using form, line, shape, and value, all part of the Language of Art —the building blocks of every picture, sculpture, and doodle. Through playful projects and guided discovery, children will learn how these elements come together to tell stories, show emotion, and bring imagination to life.

At this age, children are beginning to see patterns and possibilities everywhere. We’ll be helping them explore how a single line can dance, how a shape can feel friendly or fierce, and how light and dark can add mystery and depth.

As they create, they’ll develop hand–eye coordination, visual awareness, and confidence in self-expression. Each artwork will be a joyful step in learning to see like an artist—and to speak the expressive, magical language of art.

Doodlebugs isn’t about getting it ‘right’—it’s about discovering and experimenting, your child will leave each class a little more curious, confident, and creatively free.

CREATIVE EXPLORERS (Intermediate, ages 8 to 9)
Budding young artists learning real techniques while keeping the fun flowing.
Next term we will be exploring Music and Art and the effect they can have on each other.

Next term, we’ll be diving into Music and Art—discovering how rhythm, melody, and colour inspire one another. Through playful, hands-on projects, children will explore how music can shape the way we paint, draw, and move, using everything from lively beats to gentle harmonies as creative fuel.

At this age, children are beginning to express themselves with greater intention and imagination. In our classes, we’ll nurture that growing awareness by helping them listen, feel, and translate sound into visual expression. They’ll experiment with mark-making, pattern, and colour to capture mood and movement—learning how music can paint a picture, and how art can sing.

As they create, they’ll also be building key skills in focus, self-expression, and emotional awareness. Each session encourages them to trust their instincts and explore how art and music together can tell powerful, personal stories.

ART WIZARDS (Advanced, ages 10 to 11)
Emerging young artists discovering the art of seeing—and being seen.

Next term, we’ll be exploring Portraits: how to capture not just a likeness, but the personality, story, and emotion behind a face.

Through a mix of traditional and experimental techniques, students will study proportion, expression, and tone, while also learning how artists throughout history have portrayed identity and character.

They’ll experiment with drawing, painting, and mixed media to create portraits that reflect both observation and imagination.

As they work, they’ll grow in patience, perception, and creative confidence—learning that every portrait, like every artist, tells a story worth seeing.
